Question:
I developed a tooth abcess over the weekend, I went to the dentist yesterday
and he won't do anything to the tooth until the infection is gone. He gave
me some tylonal3, which does nothing to the pain. But anyways, last nite
before bed I got a real bad case of the shakes, I took my BG and it was 50,
I ate my usual yesterday(plus extra no sugar pudding) Could it just be the
stress from the pain and the infection that caused this? My teeth would
clatter against each other...almost felt like my jaws were locking. It was
not a nice feeling, I ate a jelly sandwich and had some hot Swiss
Mocha(sugar free) and in about twenty to thirty minutes felt fine, then went
to sleep for a couple of hours.
Answer:
Yes, pain and stress can cause bg levels to fluxuate.
How does your dentist expect you to get over the infection from the
abcess with only Tylenol #3? There is no antibiotic there. I'd call
him back and ask for some antibiotics to get rid of the infection.
Did he x-ray the tooth to determine what was causing the abcess? I had
one recently from a tooth root that had cracked. No amount of
antibiotics would cure that--the tooth had to come out.
If your dentist doesn't care (after all he's not in pain), I suggest you
find another dentist.
I had thought I said he put me on antibiotics, guess I didn't sorry.. He
did. He also took x-rays, and it is a dieing nerve(which may already be dead
from the infection. As soon as the infection is gone I will have a root
canal done. One reason he wanted to wait till the infection was gone is
because I had a tooth pulled behind this one twenty years ago, and they
broke bone, and he wants to make sure no infection was around if they pulled
it and had problems with the bone again...I have since decided on the root
canal, and he wants the infection gone for that too. Thanks for the reply,
The nerve pain in the tooth is gone now, I am having tissue pain from the
infection and swelling...it does look like the swelling is going down a
little.
My theory on bgs and pain is that yes, being in pain can use up a lot of
bg, with all those pain neurons firing messages constantly, not to mention
extra muscle tension resulting from the pain. I am not a medical anything,
expertise-wise, just basing this on common sense and personal experience.
