I need someone's advice about the after effects of a dental implant or a crown and bridge. I broke a secondary upper tooth and had it have it and the roots surgically removed. A crown and bridge will required grinding down a main front tooth and crowning it to be half the support for the new artificial tooth. An implant does not require this and is supported by a post implanted in your bone and then capped. I have had no experience with this and am very cautious of how the pressure later will affect my playing. Can anyone who's experienced this enlighten me a bit.

I recently had three dental implants placed in my lower left jaw to replace a years old failed bridge. It's worked great and hasn't had any detrimental effects on my playing. There are a few things to consider before going this route,which any good oral surgon should advise you on. The first is that not everbody is a canditate for this procedure. You must have, among other things, adequate bone density. More to the point, as a saxophone player, there is a slight risk that nerve damage can occur from the surgery, which could cause loss of feeling -- this would be catostropic. I was very concerned, but for me it was either this or taking my teeth out a night so I assumed the risk and it worked out well. The surgon did have me go for a cat scan to he had the best possible information on where there nerve was when did his thing. The only other thing you might want to know is that this is long process involving surgory, at least 6 months of healing with many trips back to the surgeon
and to the dentist every time the temp fails -- which it does, and only then do they begin to make your new teeth. Be prepared to deal with this for almost a year.
