Question:
I'm wondering what people would recommend for maintaining good dental
hygiene in a cat. I'm currently feeding mine a combination of Eukanuba
dry food (currently using hairball formula on vet's recommendation)
and Whiskas 'Top' moist food (it's the closest to an affordable
premium moist food I can find in Aus).
In the past I've always given my cats raw chicken wings/necks a few
times a week for their teeth, however my new cat wont touch them. Has
anyone got any suggestions?
Also, I'm curious to know, those of you who recommend against any raw
bones/meat because of bacterial risks - what do you recommend in
general for dental hygiene?
I've always been lead to believe that dry foods are inadequate at
maintaining good teeth, but then I was also lead to believe that the
risks of good quality/fresh raw bones were minimal.
Answer:
Have you thought about brushing the teeth? I know not all cats are tolerant
of this, but it might be worth a shot. I brush my Matilda's teeth every
other day or so.
I also brush my cat's teeth every other day and it's done wonders at
keeping their gums in good shape.
I would never risk giving them raw chicken,
or bones, and have never known a vet to recommend
it. Some cats will let you brush their
teeth. In any event you just have them professionally
cleaned periodically no matter what you do at home.
