Question:
I am debating between getting "bleaching trays," or having Brite Smile
done.
Can anyone share their own experiences with professional teeth bleaching?
Answer:
I bought a home kit with bleaching trays, and read up on the
sensitivity issue. The experts seem to agree that the longer
you wear the tray, the more likely the bleach will penetrate
your tooth and make it sensitive. So I only wore them 30 minutes
at a time, like during a nap, and was patient for the effect to
take place over weeks, not days. I was happy with the result,
do a "touch up" about once a month, and never got any sensitivity.
I did the bleaching trays by Discus Dental called "Nite White". My dentist
made a mold of my teeth and I wore the trays for a few weeks.
I was most happy with the results. I used to smoke and drink loads of
coffee, so my teeth were in need of brightening to say the least. I was
skeptical because I had tried this many years ago without success.

I did an at home bleaching treatment this summer and I didn't notice too
much of a difference. However, I did notice that the bleach ate through
my protective caps on the back of my teeth (got these as a child) and
now I have a cavity and I *never* get cavities. Also if you have
sensitive teeth, they make your teeth waaaay more sensitive. I would
only do it if my teeth were really really stained otherwise it's not
worth it, IMHO.
I did Brite Smile - the follow up "homecare" are the trays once a
month. IF your teeth are stained you will be amazed at the difference.
The process at the dentist took longer than I thought it would but now I
have a whole mouth of Chicklets I have been told. Sensitivity can be an
issue but I have not met one person who's teeth are permanently
sensitive since the procedure.
I did the at-home approach - worked great. I only needed to use the
trays daily for +-2 weeks instead of 6 and have only needed to use the
trays once every 8 weeks or so after the initial session. They do
make my teeth very sensitive for at least 24 hours though. My teeth
were very dark due to genetics, flouride as a child, smoking, coffee
and wine - bleaching them was one of the best things I ever did for my
smile.
