referral for New York City dentist -- dental school clinic???

Question:

You must see requests for this all the time, but I'm trying to find a decent affordable, respectful dentist in New York. I'm a bit phobic after some pretty rough dentist experiences, and I've got a neglected root canal situation (temporary crown left for several years...). I'm a bit phobic, and of the starving-artist variety (no insurance, no money source, and not likely to get one soon). So no frills, but need a dentist who will be reliable.

Any suggestions?

What do people think of going to dental schools for all dental care? Which one? NYU or Columbia?

Answer:

For me, "affordable" only means one thing ~ integrity! For example, when I have my car serviced, I do not care what individual procedures or parts cost ~ better to consider if the procedures are well done and if they are needed. This is my definition of "being affordable."

Good dentistry is an investment of sorts ~

You know, if I were anywhere near Brooklyn, I would at least want to call Steve B. to see what he thinks the correct diagnosis and suggested treatment might be. Who knows? If its not too far off, these Bornfeld Twins appear to have plenty of integrity ... plus the know-how for good dental care!

Reliable? Yes. Unless there is banjo playing somewhere nearby and then he's off to face the music!

Of course, I now know Tony Bad is also a NY dentist, of no small repute around these parts. Obviously, there are many options for dental care in New York. Going to the dental school clinics (or dental departments of local hospitals) is an option to consider. The fees are modest, and the quality of the treatment is generally very high. The main drawback is time, as these (esp. the dental schools) are first and foremost educational institutions, and matching your required treatment with a student who needs to fulfil a given clinical requirement plus the need for close supervision mean that treatment can take a great deal longer to complete. "Nyla" may feel free to contact me either on or off-list, or by phone, if he/she wishes to discuss this further.
