Question:
Is it normal procedure to implant new full dentures immediately (same
day) after final (multiple) extractions? My denture dentist is telling me
"yes." How can this be? The mouth will be sore, bleeding and in pain.
Answer:
I like that phrase, my association paid some marketing company real big
bucks to come up with the phrase:
"Denturists are Denture Specialists"
Immediate dentures are an acceptable method of treatment. The denture will
act as a bandage protecting your extraction sites from all the wonderful
things you put into you mouth while you heal. They may also keep some of the
swelling at bay. There are a couple of patients here that have had this done
in the last year or so, maybe they will delurk and fill you in on what to
expect from personal experience.
Your use of the word "implant" is confusing me. Are you having dental
implants placed or are they placing the denture immediately? Are you getting
one single denture or a set of complete dentures? Are the 9 teeth being
extracted all in one arch (upper or lower) or both?
Has your "denture dentist" set aside some time to discuss the treatment and
answer your questions before you have all this done?
A new denture will act as a bandage and help control the swelling. You
will, however, still have swelling. The denture will not "fit" and will need
to be readjusted. There is no problem with this number of extractions,
other than you being worried.
This should not be construed as medical advice. It is only my opinion (non
medical)
