Question:
I have SEVERE Gum Disease, my BG has gone up to the 170's
Dentist wants me to ask for a drug for the disease from my Doctor!
What drug should I ask for ?
Anyone been through this ????
Answer:
A drug for the gum disease or the diabetes? High BG can cause all sorts of
problems. My hygenist told me it's because high glucose makes the saliva
sweeter so encourages bacteria which develops into gum disease. Good blood
glucose control will help to prevent further damage.
A good idea would be to ask you dentist to send you to a periodontist. That
is the root I had to go. I ended up having surgery on both my upper and
lower gums to remove excessive tissue ect. That was three years ago. I now
floss and use a sulca brush on my teeth and gums daily as well as normal
brushing. My gums have never been better than they are now. Mike in

I had to have Scaling and Root Planing done...
it took four...one hour visits and cost $1000.
It cleared up the pain and bleeding though.
I don't think the diabetes had anything to do
with it. In my case it was caused by many years
of neglect. I floss and brush like a wild man
now because I don't want to do that again.
Studies by people whose main area of research is looking for
predicators of diabetes have found that gum diseases are a strong
indicator that diabetes is either present or in the offing.
People with diabetes are prone to gum infections. High bg levels
are responsible.
Alternatively, any infection, gums included, will raise the bg of a
diabetic.
Well, for starters, some kind of anti-biotic or anti-bacterial to
attack the microbes that are causing the disease.
Most dentists worry about treating anyone with and infection who is
not on some kind of anti-bacterial treatment regime. Anything they
do could cause the condition to spread, otherwise. OTOH, once you
ARE on a suitable medication, then you should expect the dentist to
start some kind of aggressive treatment to help clean the infection
up. This is no simple matter, in fact it's one that could become
life threatening very easily, and very quickly.
Soooo, ask your doctor for an anti-biotic, and then report to the
dentist, and ask HIM to fix up your mouth. Ask if there are any good
preventative strategies or mouth washes etc that could help prevent
a recurrance.
