Question:
I think I have the flu right now, and am suppose to have a root canal on Wed.
A friend of mine said that with being sick already, if I have the root canal I
risk getting much sicker. I am suppose to be at WDW in 1 week. I did my
December Disney trip last year with bronchitis. Should I put off the root
canal? Or is this just an old wives tale. I don't want to spend my vacation
in my room again! Need advice!
Answer:
Put off the root canal and work on getting yourself in good health for the WDW
trip. I had my wisdom teeth cut out while I had a cold. Every time I would
cough, the stitches were pulling my gums. I was supposed to keep those
stitches for 7 to 10 days. Dentist had to take them out after 3. Can't say
I've ever had a root canal, but the cold combined with the wisdom teeth wasn't
any fun.
I think you should ask the person who is going to do the procedure. Having
an opening made into your jaw when you are full of flu germs may not be
advisable.
Root canal-no probs now. I had one done and went back to work after. I never
had any discomfort after the anaesthetic wore off. Bit of an anti climax
really.
How it would behave on a long flight though I am not sure.
All the root canal does is take out the dead or calcified root-so the tooth
is effectively without any nerve-so no pain.
I'll go with concensus here....call the dentist and ask. First, there's no
cutting of the gum at all. It's like a glorified filling. Secondly, but maybe
most important, it does mean you already have an infection inside the tooth.
You really don't want your face to blow up like Chip and Dale while vacationing
1000's of miles from home.
I'm not a dentist, but speaking from personal experience :) Twice I flew with a
bad tooth - twice I was in the dentist's chair as soon as I got home (both
required root canals). Something with the air pressure........ Disney charges
around $5 for 24 Advil (just fyi). Make sure you bring your own drugs :)
