Question:
How many of you are extremely depressed by the time given to this, the pain,
and the not knowing whether a solution will ever be at hand?
I am looking for a little hope. My endontist told me last year that the
probability of failure of a root canal was around 60%. I appreciate his
honesty and realize that there is some disagreement about the failure rate (and
certainly this depends on each individual as well as each tooth's particular
circumstances). Yet, this is all hell...
Doctors, have you known of patients where it took months to seal off a tooth's
various root canals and eliminate infection and pain?
Answer:
what condition is your heart in, my friend ? this may be related to the root
canal experience and antibiotics, but you may also have had a heart attack.
see your physician, and have some blood drawn to check for heart muscle
enzymes. it could be just a coincidence..........how old are you ? what is
your activity level ? smoker ? drinker ? ever have this kind of thing before
? chest pains ? numbness of the left arm ? weakness ? generally feeling ill
? etc., etc.
if it is infection related, has the endodontist put you on a different
antibiotic that the first time ? in general the order i go in is as follows:
first choice: Penicillin
second: Z-pack (zithromax)
third: Clindamycin
fourth: Augmentin or Keflex
I am a dentist AND a patient with no less than 15 endodontically
treated teeth in my own head...many going beyond the twenty year mark
without problems. Two years ago, I was having endo done on tooth #31,
lower right second molar...the appointment was at 1 PM on a Friday...it
was the second appointment in the series...went on for about an
hour...at 2:30PM the anasthesia was starting to wear off, by 3:30 I was
slamming my head against the pavement to put myself in a coma as an
attempt to deal with the pain...stayed narc'd up until Sat 6:00AM when
I started calling all of my dental buddies to have the tooth
extracted...which was finally done by noon on Saturday. Why did it fire
up? To this day, I have no idea whatsoever. We try to do the best we
can with what we know...it's all we are capable of.
You should had learned how to make a mandibular
block on yourself. I did after one wisdom tooth
extraction short after which I got a dry socket.
