Question:
My dentist installed a bridge on the lower right. Where the bridge
abutted a molar, there was small space. In an attempt to close the
space, he drilled into the molar and put in a composite filling. That
is when my pain started. Lots of pain despite his attempts at grinding
down the molar to improve the bite. There was nothing wrong with this
molar befoe I went to him. He has been messing around with the bridge
for over two months. He offered to do a "free" root canal but at this
point, I don't trust him. I made an appointment with an endodontist
for a second opinion.
The questions is this: Could the composite that was added to the molar
begin a process that could lead to the need for a root canal?
Answer:
Yes it could, but this is not the only possible conclusion. Careless
bonding technique can lead to sometimes severe sensitivity. If the pulp
is not exposed, I'd either try replacing the restoration or place a
sedative dressing. If the pain is spontaneous and severe, though, there
is a high probability that the pulp is going bad and root canal may well
be required.

Cementing a bridge that has a defect from the beginning is not a good
sign of quality dentistry.
Placing a painful filling in a virgin tooth surface is even worse.
Went to the dentist today and he took out the composite and replaced
it with a sedative fill. He there is no root damage and a root canal
would not be required. I'm waiting for two days to see if the pain
goes away. After confronting him, he oferred to give me back my
$3,000. But that still puts me in the hands of an endodontist with a
lot of pain and a lot of expense.
