Question:
Lower arch molar. Previous root canal did not work out. Tooth now sensitive
to pressure. Had course of antibiotics(Clindamycin).
Now, endodontist X-rays and finds abscess.
Offered me the 3 options ---removal, 2nd root canal or apio.
Is there a problem with sinusitis in lower arch with apio. I thought I
read that.
Which would be the more conservative, but the more likely to work out favorably
and why?
Answer:
I was told in dental school by the Endodontic faculty that 4% of root canals
will require some form of retreatment.
So, why not proceed to the next level of treatment which is a 2nd root canal,
before jumping into surgery or extraction?
The tooth will get better when the source of residual infection is removed.
Most simply and most often this can be accomplished by just a 2nd root canal.
Which is not the same as success rate which I think in the States
is around, or just above, 60% in gp dds
I also vote for retreatment. This time with a
microscope.
