Question:
I have SEVERE Gum Disease, my BG has gone up to the 170's
Dentist wants me to ask for a drug for the disease from my Doctor!
What drug should I ask for ?
Anyone been through this ????
Everyone should take care of their teeth and gums and your BG will
show up better !!
Answer:
A drug for the gum disease or the diabetes? High BG can cause all sorts of
problems. My hygenist told me it's because high glucose makes the saliva
sweeter so encourages bacteria which develops into gum disease. Good blood
glucose control will help to prevent further damage.
A good idea would be to ask you dentist to send you to a periodontist. That
is the root I had to go. I ended up having surgery on both my upper and
lower gums to remove excessive tissue ect. That was three years ago. I now
floss and use a sulca brush on my teeth and gums daily as well as normal
brushing. My gums have never been better than they are now. Mike in

I had to have Scaling and Root Planing done...
it took four...one hour visits and cost $1000.
It cleared up the pain and bleeding though.
I don't think the diabetes had anything to do
with it. In my case it was caused by many years
of neglect. I floss and brush like a wild man
now because I don't want to do that again
In February I quit smoking (20 years, 1 pak a day)
I always had poor dental hygiene and also in February, I decided enough was
enough and have been keeping my teeth the cleanest they've been in my entire
life! The key was to cut down on the bacteria causing plaque and my
hygienist told me that the BEST thing out there was to use Listerine for
min. 30 seconds, 2 times a day!
He said the regular, green and blue all have the same effect on your gums!
They get rid of the bacteria!
When I first started using it, it was awful, it was so strong and brought
tears to my eyes.......well I roughed it out and within a short period of
time I got used to it.
My gums are in the best condition EVER!!! thanks to Listerine!
Brushing helps, but using Listerine is the key!
I strongly recommend that you use it......you will see an
improvement......and your mouth will feel better too!
If your dentist can't treat the gum disease, you need a new dentist.
If it's just an infection and not actual gum disease the regular
doctor should know how to treat it, but at the same time, the dentist
should also know since the infection is in the gums.
If the dentist is telling you to get meds for the diabetes you would
be best served seeing an endocrinologist. You should call the dentist
and ask him/her to clarify WHAT they want you to do and WHY.
Infections and gum disease are actually quite common in diabetics. I
choose my dentists by their knowledge of treating diabetic patients.
If the dentist doesn't have experience with diabetics and treating
them for infection or gum disease then I don't waste my time with
them.
In my case, the dentist has to know how to treat sudden severe hypos
as well.
the only way to find out is to start a discussion on pregnancy. If
you start having sy,pathetic labor pains or morning sickness then yes
you do have hypochondria.
