Question:
i am a undergrad doing a research paper on diseases of the body that can
have oral symptoms. In other words diseases that a dentist might
diagnos before a doctor would. my searches of various resources have
turned up little and i was wondering if anyone here might be able to
point me in a direction that will prove more prosperous.
Answer:
Also, my personal family challenge-Hypophosphatemic Vitamin D
Resistant (and Dependant) Rickets. My son has this disease, and we
were not told of the dental implications by our doctors. His teeth
began abscessing and required extraction. The specialist(dental) at
the time re-assured us it was not because of the disease. That was in
1992, and since then he has lost 14 teeth, 9 in 1995 alone. I am
presently starting to try to raise awareness of this rare (though
because it is normally genetically transmitted it ain't that rare!)
disorder. I have found a lot of research done and reported in journals
since 1968 saying dentists can be the first to see the evidence of
this problem. If you would like to help, email me.
Try a good Oral Medicine undergraduate text such as:
'The Oral Manifestation of Systemic Disease' editors J Harold Jones and
David K Mason, Bailliere Tindall London, second edition, 1990. ISBN
0-7020-1394-3
Or try your library!!!
In my experience oral medicine is poorly practiced by both dentists and medics.
