I grind my teeth at night. Apparently I've been doing this all my life. I remember being a child and my mother pointing out to me that she could hear my teeth from her room. But occasionally, as I slip in and out of sleep I'm aware that my teeth are doing something, though I'm not consciously deciding to, or controlling it. Sometimes I notice that I'm lightly rolling my bottom jaw so that my teeth are barely touching. It makes a kind of soft "swooshing" sound that I can hear. I don't know if others can hear it, but the sound and motion soothes me back to sleep. Other times, I'm really chomping down, almost clacking my back molars.

Usually what I'm doing here (again, not consciously deciding to, or even controlling it) is providing the percussion for some song that's playing in my mind. Sometimes there's no song, just the rythmic percussion provided by my night-time chomping. When I used to sleep alone, this too would soothe me back to sleep. Luckily, my dental checkups never reveal any wear or damage to my teeth so that's good. I know that lots of other people do this; anyone here? If so, are you aware of it and soothed by it?

I suffer from bruxism, also. Very similar to your description. I used a voice-activated recorder one night and was astonished to hear the volume and length of the activity! I took the recording to my dentist and he was astonished by the "violence" of the activity, said that long term damage was inevitable, fitted me with a simple, tooth-formed insert device, much like athletes wear, and have been wearing it ever since. Took some getting used to, but it's the perfect preventative alternative.
