Question:
Can someone tell me about using tetracycline by periodontists?
I have heard something about a procedure which consists in
inserting something containing tetracycline in ??? for several
days and then removing it.
Is this treatment very successful?
Is it expensive?
Is it usually covered by standard dental insurance plans?
Answer:
From what I have read, tetracycline fibers are an excellent addition to
periodontal therapy! However, they are by no means a replacement! There
is nothing a tetracycline fiber placed beneath the gum line will do to
remove gross calculus! If anyone out there has any different information
I would love to here from you! The main problem I see with these fibers
is that some dentists might use them as a substitute for good root planing
and scaling and a simply hope and pray that the disease will go away!
There is no way to treat this disease without going down into the area
affected and taking a good close look!
