Question:
Just returned from the natural medecine store and was sold the following
to treat my gums in general and the 7mm pocket in particular:
Co-enzyme Q10 - 100 mg - 1/day
Calcium Hydroxyapatite - 2/day
Goldenseal liquid extract - mix teaspoon with water; rinse mouth - 1/day
Also to be used with mixture of 6 parts baking soda and 1 part salt
applied to the gums once per day.
Since my gums are not swolen, I'm told this should restore them to a
healthy state.
Answer:
the reason your gums aren't swollen is because up until recently
you've been a smoker. The gum tissue of smokers is more fibrotic, not as
vascular so inflammation often doesn't occur. You should talk with your
physician to make sure the remedies you've chosen don't react with any other
medications you may be taking.
I also want to call your attention to the last sentence on the web page
about baking soda/salt.." You'll have to find what works best for you ......
with guidance from the microscope as used in a dental office. } "
This calls attention to the Keyes technique of periodontal treatment, using
a microscope to identify bacteria in the periodontal pocket. It was very
popular in the late seventies and eighties, and some still practice it
today. However, these treatments are what is called adjuncts. That is they
are part of a complete treatment which includes scaling and root planing or
ultrasonic debridement to improve the bacterial environment in the pocket.
Yeah, even if this snake oil elixir
had some magically properties,
how you going to get it to the base
of a 7mm pocket where it could
work. Certainly not by rinsing your
mouth or "applying to gums".
I wonder what happened to the guy that was here awhile ago and was going to
hypnotize his abscessed tooth back into health through meditation and
biofeedback. In fact, he said that once he achieved that, he was going to
make the broken cusp grow back.
If you want a homeopath's answer, better to find a newsgroup devoted to that pursuit. Most dentists do not treat periodontal disease
this way, and will probably not give you the answers you want.
We should also keep in mind that Dr. Milankov, who has participated in
smd for quite some time, doesn't practice dentistry inside the USA.
Perhaps within his country there exists another idea about how to
manage dental needs of its citizens. I don't know how prevalent
(widely accepted) holistic dentistry is in either his immediate
community or country. Maybe he'd like to give smd readers a look into
this topic.
