Question:
I've been reading a lot of posts lately about gingivitis and wanted to
share a simple treatment my vet is prescribing that helps in many cases.
The drug Antirobe is given the first five days of every month and has
been successful in controlling chronic gingivitis. One of the girls that
works at my vet has her cat on this treatment plan and she said it's
worked wonders. My cat Rodney has mouth ulcers, which cleared up after a
dental cleaning and tooth extraction, but returned later, and I am
starting him on this now.
Answer:
How much does Antirobe cost? Is it something
you can buy in a pet store or ordered through your vet? Any
contraindications? I'd be willing to give it a go if it is safe and
cheap. Those dental cleanings don't seem like much fun, having to
completely knock out the poor cat to get the job done.
Antirobe (Clindamycin) is a clear liquid type of antibiotic commonly
used for dental infections, and it must be prescribed by your vet. The
bottle I picked up yesterday contains 20 ml and cost me about $14.00. I
keep it refrigerated because it tastes kind of bad, but is not as bad
when it is cold. My pill book guide says that it should be used with
caution in animals with allergic skin disease, liver or kidney disease.
Rodney gets 1 ml twice a day for 5 days every month, which will cost me
approximately $7.00 per month. That's certainly a price I can live with!
I think it is a good idea to get an intial dental cleaning, so you can
give your cat a good start with a clean set of teeth.
