Question:
I am having a lot of trouble with my teeth but seem unable to find a
competent dentist.
Please can anyone help by explaining what Qualifications a dentist in the UK
should have?
Alternatively can anyone recommend a good professional dentist in the
Worthing, Sussex or Horsham, Sussex areas?
Answer:
BDS is the commonest. That's Batchelor of Dental Surgery. One must be
registered with the General Dental Council, you can search the register
online at www.gdc.org
There are 2 Basic Qualifications in England - at least there were when I
qualified.
B.D.S. a Batchelor of Dental Surgery - this is a degree confered by a
university dental school
L.D.S., R.C.S. [Eng.] a Licenciate in Dental Surgery from the Royal
College of Surgeons of England
The Royal college also have the further qualifications of FDS,RCS (the
fellowship)
There's three actually; BChD is given to Leeds graduates and is the same as
BDS.
You'll have difficulty finding a dentist that isn't qualified but don't let
letters fool you, it's certainly not a guide to a good dentist that will put
you at ease and treat you well. Ask around; recommendation is ALWAYS the
best way.
Exactly, well put that man!!
Cheap things are usually cheap; cheap is rarely good value; buy cheap pay
twice etc. etc. Not always but often.
